Compassionate support for cancer caregivers

Cancer treatment takes a lot of time and energy—for both caregivers and patients. Being a caregiver for a cancer patient is an incredibly important task. While it is rewarding, it can also be very stressful.

At Ellis Medicine, we believe self-care for the caregiver should be included in any treatment plan. This includes:

  • Physical activity or exercise
  • Time alone or with friends for recreational activities
  • Healthy foods that are easy to make
  • Counseling and/or support for caregivers
  • Plenty of sleep and rest

Ellis has partnered with the American Cancer Society to make it easy for caregivers to access the support they need. Caregivers can connect with a social worker on-site at Ellis once weekly or any time at their convenience.

Caregivers also have access to Roswell Park’s online CancerConnect® community that brings patients and their caregivers together in a supportive community to learn from one another.

Remember, you aren’t just staying well for yourself. If you get sick, you can’t provide the care your loved one needs. We strongly encourage all caregivers to reach out for help to find other caregivers to speak to through support groups or online communities.

If you are a sole caregiver, you can also talk with a social worker at Ellis, who may be able to connect you to respite care programs. Call 518.243.4762 to learn more.
